Child killed after being hit by car at start of school summer holidays
A child has been killed after being struck by a car in Stockton-on Tees, County Durham.
The child was critically hurt in the crash at a housing estate in Ingleby Barwick at around 12.55pm on Friday.
They were rushed to hospital but later died as a result of their injuries.
An emergency helicopter landed nearby during the incident that took place as the school summer holidays began.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a child has sadly died following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a child on Wellbrook Close in Ingleby Barwick at 12.55pm on Friday, July 23.
"Ambulance service colleagues attended the scene and the child was taken to hospital.
"Our thoughts remain with the family of the child at this extremely distressing time and they are being supported by officers.
"Enquiries are ongoing in relation to the collision."
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called at 12.55pm to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a child on Wellbrook Close in Ingleby Barwick.
"We sent a specialist paramedic and two ambulance teams and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance team, who also attended.
"We transported the child to James Cook Hospital by road in a critical condition with support from the GNAAS doctor on board."
The area was cordoned off as police carried out an investigation.
