Stewards Tackle Rainbow Flag-Waving Euro 2020 Pitch Invader

Stewards tackled a rainbow flag-waving pitch invader ahead of Germany’s UEFA Euro 2020 match against Hungary in Munich on June 23.

This footage by Kerry Hau shows a person running in front of the teams, waving the flag, as they stood for the Hungarian national anthem. As many as five stewards can be seen running toward the person.

The incident came after UEFA denied a request from Munich’s mayor to light the stadium in rainbow colours for the match amid controversy over amendments to a number of Hungarian laws accused of being anti-LGBTQI+.

In a statement released on Twitter in which its logo has been updated to show the rainbow flag, UEFA said that its decision to turn down Munich’s request was not political.

“On the contrary, the request itself was political, linked to the Hungarian football’s team’s presence in the stadium for this evening’s match with Germany,” it wrote. ""For UEFA, the rainbow is not a political symbol, but a sign of our commitment to a more diverse and inclusive society," it said, adding that it “is proud to wear the colours of the rainbow”.
