Stepmother Makes ‘Impromptu’ Request to Have Officiant Do Her Vow Renewal Ceremony Right Before Stepson’s Wedding

Stop the wedding!
One groom's stepmother decided the best time for her vow renewal was just before her stepson's nuptials, according to a post in the r/wedding subreddit. Though the incident happened years ago, the maid of honor — the bride's sister — recalled the 'bold and rude' situation vividly.
"I think the groom's stepmother believed she needed a real wedding venue and officiant to renew her vows," the maid of honor wrote in the Reddit post. "And chose her stepson's big day as the best impromptu opportunity. In front of 300 guests."

The stepmother approached the officiant after the bride had already arrived at the altar, the maid of honor confirmed in the comment section of the post. The officiant handled the situation calmly by turning off his microphone and refusing her request. He told the stepmother that if she wanted to leave, the wedding could proceed just fine without her.
The whole interaction lasted no longer than two minutes, the maid of honor recalled. The stepmother was fairly subdued afterwards.
"She stayed — and stayed quiet for the rest of the wedding and dinner reception," she wrote in the post. "She may have been stunned that he said no."
The groom's mom, who was also present, did "a face palm after witnessing that request."
The maid of honor noted in the comment section that the stepmother was frequently mean and manipulative with the groom since he was a child.

"People are always proposing and announcing their marriage and pregnancy at other peoples' weddings. Like, WTF?" one commenter said.
According to the maid of honor, both sides of the family ( the couple is now divorced) still talk about the awkward moment.
"It became a legendary story from both the groom's and my side of the family that has been told over and over to this day," the maid of honor wrote.
