Statue of German Colonial Officer Removed in Namibia

The statue of a German colonial officer, Curt von François, was removed from Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek on Wednesday, November 23, following calls from the public to remove the statue.

The statue was unveiled in October 1965 to celebrate him as the city’s founder, according to local media.

Activists have argued this is an incorrect narrative and asked for it to be replaced by a sculpture of Windhoek’s “rightful” founder, Jan Jonker Afrikaner.

Calls from the public to remove the statue culminated in 1,700 signatures on an online petition.
