A former Tottenham player thinks the ‘statement’ signing of Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan would take the side to the ‘next level’.

According to a recent report from The Times, Bastoni is on Antonio Conte’s three-man wish list for the January transfer window. He wants Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici to begin discussions with Inter for the centre-back.

Conte also hopes Paratici can land USA midfielder Weston McKennie from Juventus, as well as RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan.

Bastoni appears comfortable at Inter. He has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season, helping the Nerazzurri go fifth in the Serie A table and qualify from Champions League Group C.

However, his contract at the San Siro expires in summer 2024. Therefore, he is facing a big decision about whether to renew with Inter or push for a new challenge.

Spurs will offer the centre-half the chance to star in the Premier League. This could attract Bastoni as he has only ever played in his native Italy before.

Former Spurs shot-stopper Paul Robinson has now given his verdict on the Bastoni links. He reckons the 23-year-old would be a ‘statement’ capture for the north London outfit. Robinson also thinks Conte has been hinting about top-quality signings during his Spurs press conferences.

“Bastoni would be a statement signing,” the pundit told Football Insider.

New defender could help Spurs reach ‘next level’

“That is the type of signing Spurs need to make if they want to go onto the next level. They need to get that level of player now.

“That is what Conte is hinting at in his press conferences when he says he needs two or three transfer windows.

“Conte needs to be given the time and the funds to turn Spurs into a side who challenge consistently at the top of the table.”

Bastoni would likely go straight into the Spurs defence. As he is left footed, he could replace Ben Davies on the left side of a back three.

He could form a strong defensive partnership with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier, should all three players be fit.

Even though Bastoni’s contract is running down, Inter would still demand a big amount for him. transfermarkt put his value at €55m (currently £47.8m) and this is around the figure Inter would charge.

While Bastoni may arrive at Spurs in January, a defender has been tipped to leave the club. The man in question is academy graduate Japhet Tanganga.

Conte is happy for club chiefs to sell the 23-year-old as he doesn’t view him as a solid option going forward.

Plus, Tanganga’s selling value has pretty much halved. Spurs were originally holding out for £16.8m, but now they will sell him for just £8.75m.

Meanwhile, Graeme Souness has told Liverpool to sign a playmaker before Spurs can get to him.
