State polls: Rais Yatim agrees Perikatan victory may change federal govt but says there will be limitations

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 ― Jelebu division Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chief Tan Sri Rais Yatim agreed with PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang claim’s that victory in the six state polls on August 12 will lead to MPs in the unity government to support Perikatan Nasional (PN).

However, the former Dewan Negara president, said there will be limitations despite a logical narrative, Sinar Harian reported.

“For example, some allocation under the Constitution, whether under the consolidated money fund, that we use together are still at the centre," he was quoted as saying.

He was commenting on the matter when met by reporters at the Himpunan Anak Muda PN programme in Jelebu yesterday.

Rais also explained that the federal government must listen to every demand from the states when spending the consolidated funds.

“The matter has to be heard on how to spend the consolidated fund,” he reportedly said.

Abdul Hadi had previously claimed there will be a change in the federal government if PN wins all six states in the state election.

The Marang MP therefore, said it is important for the people to throw their support by ensuring the victory of PN candidates contesting in the August 12 polls.

However, Abdul Hadi’s claims received a lot of critics from various political leaders including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who questioned the Islamic party leader on whether he understands the federal constitution.

Anwar said it was mind boggling that the PAS president would think that the federal government could change due to the results of an election in six states.

The Tambun MP also said that the federal government was formed through a majority support shown in Parliament.

Anwar also reminded Hadi that two-thirds of members of parliament have thrown their support behind the unity government.
