KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — Kota Melaka incumbent MP Khoo Poay Tiong urged Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali to clarify the fake report that Disneyland and Disney City Theme Park will be developed in Jasin by the year 2027, which has caused the state to become a global laughing stock.

"Sulaiman should make a bold move to act against his official who issued the statement that is allegedly tantamount to churning out untrue information.

"Local and even Singapore news portals have reported the development as fake news by confirming it with The Walt Disney Company in the United States that had caused a big embarrassment to Melaka," said Melaka DAP vice chairman.

According to a report by The Star, the DAP lawmaker urged the state government to be more responsible when issuing statements on mega projects and added that Sulaiman should take responsibility since the issue has tarnished the reputation and integrity of the state.

"You can't simply go and claim Superman and Ultraman are coming to Melaka and hold a press conference,” Khoo said.

On a side note, Khoo also commended the local media for not reporting on the dubious Disneyland development.

"You can't go and get angry with the media when they are doubtful of certain preposterous projects and refrain from asking questions during a press conference,” he said.

Khoo was referring to an incident where Melaka tourism committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis said that the local media "have a communication problem” when they didn’t pose any questions at the end of the press conference.

According to the report, the journalists, however, explained that they felt the event to announce a mega project in the state was not organised properly and without proper information so they remained silent.

On Tuesday, Muhammad Jailani said that the first Asean Disneyland and Disney City Theme Park will be developed at an 80.9ha site at Jasin by 2027, and the project will cost around RM2 billion.

CNN Digital’s Asia Writer Heather Chen however contacted Disney's officials and was told that there are no official plans for a Disney theme park in Malacca and earlier reports were purely speculative and misinformed.
