Two weeks before Marine Atlantic's new Ala'suinu ferry is scheduled to begin servicing the Argentia-North Sydney route, technicians have discovered a problem with vessel's lubrication system.

In press release Friday afternoon, Marine Atlantic said the problem was discovered during a review of the ferry's operating systems leading up to its June 14 start date. The statement, from Marine Atlantic spokesperson Darrell Mercer, did not specify what the problem is but said specialized technicians will be completing a full review over the next few days.

"Unfortunately, at this time, the corporation is unable to confirm the impact on the Ala'suinu's original enter service date of June 14. This will be determined in the coming days as more information becomes available," says the statement.

Tourism Minister Steve Crocker issued a statement saying he's concerned about the vessel's mechanical issue.

"News of mechanical issues could have a detrimental effect on the confidence of this vessel and route," said Crocker in the statement.

Mercer said Marine Atlantic is working with Stena North Sea, the ship's owner, to identify and fix the issue, adding an update will be provided next week.
