24 Feb – The attempt to develop new upcoming "Star Wars" movies has been rocky but the Force is still strong with this franchise, as Lucasfilm has recently tapped a new director to develop a new story of the galaxy far, far away.

J.D. Dillard, whose feature directorial efforts include 2019's "Sweetheart" and 2016's "Sleight", is developing the new movie, though it is unclear whether he will also be directing it.

Deadline is reporting that the movie will supposedly be set on Exegol, the hidden Sith Planet that was introduced in last year's "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker". If this is true, it might shine more light on the Sith Eternal cult.

Dillard will be developing the project with Matt Owens, who is known for his writing works on Marvel TV series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", "Luke Cage", and "The Defenders".

Apart from Dillard's movie, it is unclear if Rian Johnson is still moving forward with his new "Star Wars" trilogy since he is currently focusing on his "Knives Out" sequel. It is also not known if Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, is still working on his movie as well and if Taika Waititi has accepted the offer to direct a new movie, and whether this is the same as Feige's project or a completely different one.

It's not yet known whether Dillard's movie will receive a theatrical release or it will be released on streaming platform Disney+.

At the moment, Disney+ is home to several "Star Wars" series. The second season of "Mandalorian" will air this October, while a "Rogue One" prequel series starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor will most likely be released this year too, but Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi series might only be playing next year or the year after since its filming has been postponed.
