Dilip Wedaarachchi, Sri Lankan fisheries minister between 2015 and 2019, said he wanted the people. He demonstrated his views by taking a bite out of a whole fish in front of the media.
On October 22, a COVID-19 cluster was detected in Sri Lanka's main wholesale fish market which led to thousands of infections in the country. Since then fish sales have slumped in the island nation, causing serious financial hardship to many in the fishing industry.
Wedaarachchi said that people were going into debt because they could not afford to stage multi-day fishing expeditions.
