Spurs manager search: Nagelsmann ‘rival’ becomes ‘serious contender’ as club fear Ten Hag repeat
According to reports, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is ’emerging as a serious contender’ as Spurs look to appoint a new permanent head coach.
Tottenham have been on the lookout for a new manager since Antonio Conte was sacked at the end of March.
His former assistant – Cristian Stellini – was given the job on an interim basis until the summer but he was dismissed after just four games in charge. He was let go in the aftermath of Tottenham’s embarrassing 6-1 loss against Newcastle United.
Ryan Mason has since taken over on a short-term contract. Under him, Spurs succumbed to Diogo Jota’s last-minute winner as Liverpool beat their rivals 4-3 at Anfield.
Mason has openly stated that he thinks he’s “ready” to become Tottenham’s new permanent manager but they are likely to appoint a head coach with more experience.
Julian Nagelsmann quickly emerged as a leading contender for the role following Bayern Munich’s harsh decision to let him go. But last week it was reported that his wage demands are proving to be a ‘huge obstacle’ that could block Tottenham from appointing him.
Now ESPN are reporting that Slot is ‘rivalling’ Nagelsmann for the Tottenham job. The Feyenoord boss is said to be ’emerging as a serious contender’.
Slot was targeted by Leeds United earlier this season after they sacked Jesse Marsch but he ended up staying at Feyenoord.
The report claims Tottenham’s hierarchy are keen to make sure that they do not ‘miss out on appointing a lesser well-known coach’ after they recently decided against bringing in Erik ten Hag.
‘Slot is under contract at Feyenoord until 2025 and only has a clause in his deal allowing him to join a Premier League club in 2024 — meaning the Dutch club would be entitled to compensation were he to leave.
‘Nevertheless, sources have told ESPN that he has previously attracted the attention of other English clubs including Chelsea and West Ham United.
‘According to sources, Spurs don’t want to miss out on appointing a lesser well-known coach after rejecting Erik ten Hag following Jose Mourinho’s departure from the club.’

The report from ESPN adds ex-Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has been ‘internally discussed’.
‘Sources have told ESPN that Spurs have not as yet made contact with former boss Pochettino but other names have been discussed internally including Brendan Rodgers.
‘Levy had spoken to Rodgers in the past about becoming Spurs manager and is out of work after leaving Leicester City by mutual consent on April 3.
‘It is unclear whether Rodgers is on Tottenham’s shortlist. One source also suggested Mainz boss Bo Svensson is being considered while Celtic’s Ange Postecloglou and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi have been linked with the vacancy.’
