The long-term future of Antonio Conte at Spurs remains unclear and so they have identified two potential replacements, according to reports.

In a nail-biting group, Spurs just about managed to get the job done in Europe in midweek. They topped Group D after a last minute winner against Marseille.

After a positive start to the season, Spurs have ran into some difficulties lately. In the Premier League they have lost two of their last three matches.

Despite their recent stumble, they are in the top four and have progressed through their Champions League group.

Since arriving in north London, Conte has had a largely positive impact on his squad. Considering where they were when he first took over, the progress he has made is clear to see.

If Spurs were to continue to average two points per game, they would finish the season with 76 points. For context, that would be higher than they have managed in any of their last four seasons.

While Conte has slowly been progressing things, his long-term future has often remained unclear. His current deal with Spurs expires next summer, although the club does have the option to extend by a further year.

Spurs themselves are keen to tie Conte down to a new long-term deal, but nothing has been agreed as of yet.

Conte has been backed with signings over the summer and further funds are expected to be afforded to him. While there is a project to build upon at Spurs, Conte’s head could still be turned.

As the rumours have continued to swirl over his future, Spurs have been weighing up their options should he choose to leave.

Diego Simeone is on their radar

From a stylistic point of view, Diego Simeone does share some traits with Conte.

The Argentine manager has been with Atletico Madrid since 2011 and he is closing in on 600 games for them in the dug-out. Despite his long-term standing with the club, there is the feeling that Simeone could soon move on.

His side were knocked out of the Champions League after they finished bottom of Group B.

According to a report from CMW, Spurs are considering a move for Simeone if Conte was to leave the club. Atletico Madrid currently sit third in La Liga and are nine points behind league leaders Real Madrid.

Simeone has won eight trophies with Atletico Madrid, including two league titles. Following their recent struggles, Simeone himself could be tempted by a fresh challenge.

Alongside Simeone, Spurs have also identified Roger Schmidt as another alternative.

The Benfica manager has done a fine job since taking over in May this year. Benfica managed to top their Champions League group after beating Maccabi Haifa 6-1 on the final gameweek.

Rudy Galetti of SportItalia has claimed that Spurs would consider the manager as having an ‘ideal profile’ for them.

The German manager has a wealth of experience and has managed over 600 matches. He is most known from his time at Bayer Leverkusen and more recently PSV Eindhoven.

Benfica have made a flying start under Schmidt as they currently sit six points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga.
