'Spectacular' Timelapse Video Shows Volcano Erupting on La Palma

Ash and smoke billowed from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, Spain, on the morning of Friday, November 5.

The European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said the volcano’s lava flow covered 990.7 hectares (3.8 square miles), and destroyed 2,581 buildings by Thursday.

A timelapse video released by the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET shows the volcano erupting on Friday morning. The agency called the footage “spectacular,” saying, “you can see the cloud cascade (Foehn wall) on the left.” Credit: AEMET via Storyful
