The special counsel charged with investigating former president Donald Trump has subpoenaed Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who both worked in his administration, The New York Times reported on Wednesday.

Along with being the president’s daughter and son-in-law, respectively, Ms Trump and Mr Kushner served as trusted advisers and confidantes during Mr Trump’s campaign and administration.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the nomination of Jack Smith late last year due to Mr Trump’s decision to seek the presidency once again and President Joe Biden preparing to run for re-election.

Mr Smith had previously subpoenaed former vice president Mike Pence. Mr Pence has sought to legally challenge the subpoena and has invoked he acted as president of the Senate during the January 6 riot as per the US Constitution.
