‘Spaceman’ Teaser, Release Date: Adam Sandler Takes On Solitary Interstellar Mission In Netflix Pic

Netflix on Tuesday morning unveiled the first teaser trailer for its Adam Sandler-led sci-fi drama Spaceman, directed by Chernobyl Emmy winner Johan Renck, also announcing that the pic is slated to debut on the platform on March 1st, 2024.

Adapted for the screen by Colby Day, the film is based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, which was released in 2017. It picks up with Sandler’s astronaut Jakub six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, as he realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Maestro‘s Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time, which he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Voiced by Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Paul Dano (Dumb Money), Hanuš works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.

Spaceman also stars Kunal Nayyar (The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry), Lena Olin (Hunters), and Isabella Rossellini (Julia). Producers on the project included Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Max Silva. The exec producers are Ben Ormand, Renck and Barry Bernardi.

By all appearances, Spaceman will be more weighty in tone than any film Sandler has made for Netflix before. While there was a bit of dramatic heft to his acclaimed 2022 basketball pic Hustle, he’s best known for showcasing his dramatic chops in the Safdie brothers’ A24 crime thriller Uncut Gems, which won him an Independent Spirit Award, among other accolades, as well as Paul Thomas Anderson’s classic, Punch Drunk Love.

Most recently, Sandler scored the biggest ever debut for a Netflix animated feature with his new pic Leo, which debuted on the platform on November 21st. He also found success on the platform earlier in the year with the comedy titles You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Murder Mystery 2.
