South Korean rapper Iron, 29, whose real name is Jung Heon-cheol, was found dead at an apartment in Seoul on Monday (25 January), Seoul Jungbu Police said.

Iron was found bleeding and lying on a patch of grass by an apartment security guard around 10.25am. He was later transported to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to Soompi.com, Seoul Jungbu Police Station confirmed in a call, “We were called in by a [apartment] guard who told us they discovered Iron. He was urgently taken to the hospital, but he passed away.” They added, “At this point, it is unclear whether or not Iron died by suicide. We are investigating the exact cause of his death.”

Iron rose to fame after becoming a semi-finalist in the third season of music channel Mnet’s hip-hop audition program Show Me The Money in 2014.

Despite his success, the rapper had a brush with the law in 2016 when he allegedly hit his ex-girlfriend in the head with his fist, reportedly after she rejected his demands while they were having sex.

The artist also allegedly cut himself in the thigh with a weapon taken from his kitchen and threatened her with it. He told her that if she reported this to the police, he would tell them that she stabbed him. In 2018, he was sentenced to eight months in prison for committing the said violent act.

The scandal-ridden rapper was also arrested in 2018 again, for using marijuana between 2014 and 2015. He was sentenced to eight months in prison.
