Sources: DeMar DeRozan plans to meet with Los Angeles Clippers

Free agent star guard DeMar DeRozan plans to meet with the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Los Angeles native, 31, has the Chicago Bulls courting him as well, sources said.

With Kawhi Leonard expected to spend the bulk of the 2021-22 season recovering from ACL surgery, adding DeRozan would be a top-level pickup.

The Clippers do not have the cap space to sign the four-time All-Star to a deal near his true value. It would take some major cap contorting to clear the necessary space.

All the team has at its disposal is the $5.3 million taxpayer mid-level exception. A sign-and-trade with the San Antonio Spurs — DeRozan’s previous team — could also be an option, but it’s unclear if the Clippers have the assets the Spurs would want.

Last season with the Spurs, DeRozan averaged 21.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and a career-high 6.9 assists.
