Sophie Turner looks back on 'incredibly sad' divorce from Joe Jonas: 'We had a beautiful relationship'

Sophie Turner is opening up about her split from ex-husband Joe Jonas.

The Game of Thrones star discussed the next phase of her career — and personal life — following her breakup with the "Cake by the Ocean" singer in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar. "I'm going through a legal process right now where I can't really say much, but it was incredibly sad," Turner said regarding the fallout of her divorce. "We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard."

Turner, 28, married Jonas, 35, in 2019, after three years of dating. The former couple, who share two children, purchased a Miami house together in 2022 but sold it the next year. Jonas filed for divorce in Florida in September 2023, beginning a long string of legal proceedings and public appearances that garnered extensive media coverage. The two entertainers finally reached a settlement in September.

Turner said she was unhappy living in the United States while she was married to Jonas. "The gun violence, Roe v. Wade being overturned… Everything just kind of piled on," the Dark Phoenix actress told Harper's. "After the Uvalde [school] shooting, I knew it was time to get the f--- out of there."

Turner said she now feels much more comfortable back in her native United Kingdom. "I'm so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England," she said. "I just never really feel like myself when I'm not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long — six years — and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant. I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, 'I never got to touch your belly.' We didn't have those key experiences with each other."

The actress later reflected on her relationship with English aristocrat Peregrine Pearson. "We're very happy," Turner said. "It came around very quickly. I just needed to go on a date to know how to do it again. That was the first date and the last date, and it's been great… He's lovely. He's funny, and he brings out the cheeky side of me, the fun side. He lights me back up."

Turner also said that one of her upcoming projects, the psychological thriller Trust, helped her process some of her emotions from the recent volatility of her personal life. "That one really mirrored my life from this past year, and it was a very cathartic experience for me," she said of the film. "It was a chance to let out some serious anger, which was fun. So that felt right for me to do."

The actress recently starred in Joan, a six-part miniseries about real-life criminal mastermind Joan Hannington. "I'd never led a TV show before, and I feel as if it's far more challenging than a big movie like X-Men," Turner said. "There are so many people behind that, so many opinions. They make all the decisions, and you just kind of say, 'Yes, OK, whatever needs to be done.' Whereas with Joan, I had so much say in it, and it was so collaborative… It feels like I’m releasing something that's very near and dear to my heart."
