If Someone Was Going to Wear Crocs to the Emmys, It Was Going to Be Cousin Greg

Celebrities got red-carpet ready for last night's Emmy Awards even though there wasn't an official red carpet—Tracee Ellis Ross glittered in Alexandre Vauthier, Regina King looked regal in Schiaparelli—but Succession's Nicholas Braun reminded us with his look that, ultimately, guests were still tuning in from home. And that's where the Crocs came in.

The actor wore the controversial, comfy footwear (you either swear by them or can't stand the sight of them) to the virtually filmed ceremony, where he competed for the title of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as the delightfully awkward Cousin Greg. In a move not too far off from his character, he suited up in Paul Smith from the ankles up, but mixed white socks and bedazzled Crocs below in a way that screamed, "Exhausted mom handling the carpool this week," or "Bistro chef juggling orders," or "Bushwick resident shuffling to the bodega for 'dinner' at 1 a.m."

But because this was a fancy awards show, Braun's clogs were generously decorated with pins and shiny accoutrements reading, "Antibodies," the title of the COVID-inspired track he released during quarantine.

"I was like, am I really going to wear some Crocs to the Emmys?" he told the L.A. Times of his quirky sartorial decision. "But honestly, once I popped them on, it just [felt] very right with this tux. The Crocs are in full effect. Socks plus Crocs. Hopefully my feet won't get too sweaty.”

Braun's love for the porous footwear goes beyond Emmys night. Two weeks ago, he shared an enthusiastic unboxing video on Instagram, in which he flaunted bags and bags of Crocs like a kid on Christmas morning. (His Antibodies pair was part of the delivery.)

Crocs have made a resurgence on the runway in recent years, too, from Balenciaga's mind-boggling platform and high-heel iterations to Christopher Kane's fur-lined renditions, but perhaps Braun's take on the shoe is what will finally get nonbelievers to hop on the trend. And in a time when you're spending most of your time at home, why not?
