ALOR GAJAH, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- She was the only pupil registered for Year One at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Jernih, Lubok China here this year but that did not in any way dampen her spirit to begin her education journey.
Although all alone in her class, Nur Zahirah Aisyah Muhamad Zuhaili, 7, was full of excitement and enthusiasm and even memorised the names of all the teachers.
Revealing her deep interest in learning, Nur Zahirah Aisyah said she did not mind being alone in the classroom as she could always meet other pupils during recess.
“It was fun; I woke up early in the morning to come to school because I am keen to study and meet new friends and teachers.
“I want to be a doctor when I grow up, and if I study alone there will be no distraction,” she said when met by reporters in her class today.
MELAKA-SCHOOL 2 (LAST) ALOR GAJAH
SK Sungai Jernih headmaster Mustafa Kamal Mohd Nor said the number of pupils in the school has dropped from 31 last year to 16 this year, comprising 10 boys and six girls.
“For Year One, only one pupil registered compared to nine pupils last year.
“This is probably because villagers in this area are mostly senior citizens and not young families, and some of the children here live with their grandparents,” he said.
Mustafa said the school’s low enrolment would not prevent the teachers from giving their best to the students although they might lack competition.
He said the school was proud for being selected as an outstanding school last year when all the students who took the Ujian Peperiksaan Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination passed all their subjects.
