Sofyan Amrabat has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League with either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur, prompting a report to reveal his preference.
Amrabat was one of the main players to benefit from Morocco’s run to the World Cup semi-finals. Many members of their squad put themselves in the shop window with their performances. But the Fiorentina man could be one of the most in-demand options now.
Liverpool need to strengthen their midfield, where Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be out of contract at the end of the season. Furthermore, the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara may no longer represent the long-term future of their department at Anfield.
In turn, Amrabat has emerged as a gettable option for Liverpool to regenerate that territory. They could offer him his first experience of playing in the Premier League.
Alternatively, long-term admirer Antonio Conte could lure him to Tottenham after supposedly trying before.
Spurs signed Yves Bissouma in the summer to bolster their midfield. But there have been links with other players in his position since, so there could be room for another arrival.
In that regard, Amrabat is someone who has a good reputation and could get a chance with Spurs.
But according to Foot Mercato, any confidence his English suitors have may be misplaced. The French source claims Amrabat has a “completely different preference”.
Instead, the 26-year-old would favour a transfer to Atletico Madrid, who have been keen to take him to La Liga.
Amrabat spoke flatteringly about Atletico’s style under Diego Simeone while he was on duty at the World Cup. Hence, a link up in Spain could appeal strongly to him.
However, all hope is not lost for Liverpool and Tottenham. The report warns that Atletico might not be able to bid as highly for Amrabat, while Fiorentina want to gain as much money as possible by selling him.
The Serie A side only have Amrabat under contract until 2024, although there is the option for them to extend his deal by a further year.
Fiorentina may be ready to sell Sofyan Amrabat
There must a growing acceptance in Florence though that Amrabat may be destined for a bigger stage. And given he actually took his time to prove himself for La Viola, they might want to cash in while his stock is high.
In theory, Liverpool or Tottenham could outbid Atletico for the Dutch-born player. However, they would then have to convince him that they would be a suitable next destination for his career.
Liverpool have already been hard at work on that front. Indeed, Jurgen Klopp has met with Amrabat’s entourage.
But discussions between the player and his advisors have led to his preference for the Atletico move. Thus, there is some way to go still.
For now, Amrabat must retain his focus on his duties with Fiorentina. He has made 21 appearances for them this season, contributing to his overall tally of 79 since his arrival there from Hellas Verona.
