Robin Gosens claims Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo made him feel “small” after he refused to give him his shirt at the end of a match.

Ronaldo is used to getting numerous requests for his shirt during his career with the Portugal international widely regarded as one of the best players to have ever lived.

However, he can’t give everyone his shirt and Germany international Gosens has revealed that Ronaldo gave him one of the most “embarrassing” moments of his career by refusing to swap shirts.

Transfer gossip: Manchester United need £160m-plus for three summer targets

Gosens has come up against Ronaldo during his international career with Germany but it was a Serie A match between Juventus and Atalanta – who Gosens is on loan at Inter Milan from – in which the “embarrassing” incident happened.

“After the final whistle I went to him… but Ronaldo did not accept,” Gosens wrote in his autobiography Dreams Are Worthwhile. “I asked: ‘Cristiano, can I have your shirt?’ He didn’t even look at me, he just said: ‘No!’.

“I was completely ashamed. I went away and felt small. You know that moment when something embarrassing happens and you look around to see if anyone noticed it? That’s what I felt and tried to hide it.”

Meanwhile, Man Utd posted a video earlier this month of Ronaldo insisting he was looking forward to next season under Erik ten Hag as the players look to put their terrible 2021/22 campaign behind them.

“I knew he did a fantastic job for Ajax and that he’s an experienced coach but we need to give him time and things need to change they way he wants,” Ronaldo said on United’s official social media channels.

“I hope we have success of course because if you have success, all of Manchester are going to have success as well. So I wish him the best.

“We are happy and excited – not only the players, but the supporters as well. I wish him the best and let’s believe that next year we’re going to win trophies.

“For me, the most important thing is to try to win the games and try to win some championship or some cup but I believe that Manchester will be where they belong.

“As I say before, sometimes it takes time but I still believe.”
