SNL: Bowen Yang’s Moo Deng Sticks Up for Chappell Roan: ‘Women Owe You Nothing!’ — Watch

Moo Deng — the pygmy hippo who has recently become a social media sensation — is not standing for any Chappell Roan hate.

During Saturday Night Live‘s Season 50 premiere, Bowen Yang appeared as the 10-week-old animal on Weekend Update to lament the perils of fame.

“For the past 10 weeks, I’ve been going nonstop, running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose, and the response has been overwhelming,” Yang’s Moo Deng shared. “But it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries: Reminder, women owe you nothing!”

As Moo Deng’s media appearance went on, her qualms with her newly found fame began to sound oddly familiar.

“When I’m in my enclosure, tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work,” the hippo said. “That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial bestie, or because you appreciate my talent.”

Rising pop star Roan recently made similar comments about her career — which she calls “The Project” — and boundaries she prefers to have with her fans. But there is one big difference between Moo Deng and Roan: One of them is a singing sensation, while the other is known for simply “having a slippery body that bounces.”

To be clear, Moo Deng wasn’t only poking fun at Roan; she was mostly sticking up for her! “Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health,” the hippo said. “We both deserve patience and grace, so stop harassing her, and stop throwing shellfish at her.”
