Smoke and flames as wildfire rages in Serbia

STORY: Around 50 hectares (about 124 acres) of pine forest was swallowed up by the flames and local authorities declared a state of emergency, local website Telegraf reported.

On Saturday (August 6) firefighting helicopters were taking water from a nearby lake and spraying it over active wildfires in the area.

Extreme fires have swallowed up huge swathes of land, destroyed homes and threatened livelihoods across the world in the first half of 2022.

Multiple wildfires burnt through Balkan countries in July forcing local authorities to evacuate villages in Slovenia and leaving parts of Albanian forests charred with cinder and fallen trees.

Temperatures reaching up to 95 Fahrenheit have hit the region, part of a global pattern of rising temperatures, widely attributed by scientists and climatologists to human activity.
