Smoke From Fire in Pickering, Ontario, Slows Traffic on Highway 401

A large blaze at a storage facility in Pickering, east of Toronto, produced heavy plumes of smoke that drifted over Highway 401, forcing traffic to slow down due to reduced visibility, local media reported.

The City of Pickering said firefighters were at the scene on Squires Beach Road, just south of the 401, adding that the fire was contained and that there was “no immediate threat to residents or nearby businesses.” Drivers were asked to avoid the area as traffic routes were already congested.

Several storage trailers caught fire and flames spread onto nearby grass, as depicted in footage captured by a CityNews helicopter.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, city officials said. Credit: @BradWillNoSpace via Storyful
