Smoke Fills Skies Above La Palma's Cumbre Vieja Volcano
Lava, gas and other volcanic material spewed out of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma on Sunday, October 24, a day after the main cone of the volcano partially collapsed.
As of Saturday, lava had extended to cover 891.9 hectares (3.44 square miles) of the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Imagery analyzed by scientists also showed that 2,143 buildings had been destroyed by volcanic activity.
Some 7,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since the start of eruptions on September 19. This week, dozens of homes were ordered evacuated due to the threat of scalding lava flows.
