Smoke and Ash Fill Sky Over La Palma Amid 'Explosive' Volcanic Activity

More than 6,000 people were evacuated as of Wednesday, September 22, as eruptions from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma sent lava oozing on a destructive path towards the sea, Telecinco reported.

The eruption activity was first reported at around 3:30 pm local time September 19.

Video from the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan), who said it was filmed on September 22, shows dark ash and smoke darkening the sky as scientists headed towards the volcano.

“Today the activity is more explosive with a large amount of ash in the atmosphere,” Involcan said. Credit: Involcan via Storyful
