Skiers hit slopes near Moscow as COVID cases soar

The parking lot was full and queues formed for ski lifts at the Sorochany resort, 30 miles north of Russian capital.

Wearing masks is reportedly obligatory inside the resort's rental facilities as well as in dressing rooms and cafes, but many visitors were seen not wearing any personal protection and did not practice social distancing indoors or outdoors.

Russia has resisted imposing a strict lockdown as it did in spring last year, relying on targeted measures instead.

The country has the world's fourth-highest number of COVID-19 cases. It reported 24,246 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours on Tuesday, including 4,842 in Moscow, taking the national tally to 3,284,384.
