Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who died in hospital after he was taken into custody by Peel police and transferred to Toronto police.

In a news release Thursday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Peel Regional Police responded to a call for service on Mavis Road in Brampton.

At a Circle K, they found a man and realized he was wanted by the Toronto Police Service (TPS), according to the release.

"The man was subsequently transported to a TPS police station," said the SIU.

The SIU said "at some point," the man was transported to hospital, where he died Wednesday.

Why officers responded to the Circle K and how the man ended up in hospital was not shared by the SIU.

"Understanding what transpired is all part of the SIU's investigation," a spokesperson for the SIU said when asked for more details.
