Sir Alex Ferguson highlights key area Man Utd must improve to become serial-trophy winners once again
Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that Marcus Rashford is not a striker and has advised Manchester United to sign ‘an extra one’ as they continue their resurgence under Erik Ten Hag.
Rashford scored a crucial goal in Man Utd’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, taking his season’s tally to 25 across all competitions.
The England international has been tremendous for the Red Devils this term, but Ferguson believes another quality striker is required for them to consistently challenge for trophies again.
During his time at Old Trafford, the Scotsman guided Man Utd to an incredible 38 major trophies – making Ferguson the club’s most successful manager in their history.
The Scotsman had some fantastic strikers during his 27-year stint with the Red Devils, such as Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin Van Persie, to name a few.
Speaking to Sky Sports, talking about Rashford, Ferguson said: “I don’t think he’s a striker. He operates away from the left-hand side and has been fantastic.
“His finishing is always good, always keeps his shots down – which is really important for a striker – and is in a great vein of form.
“Unfortunately for us, he’s the main source of goals – we could do with an extra one, but he’s doing it.”
Osimhen remains Man Utd’s no. 1 target
After Cristiano Ronaldo (originally, another Ferguson signing) departed the Red Devils by mutual consent last November, Ten Hag brought in Wout Weghorst on a short-term loan from Burnley as a stop-gap solution.
However, despite putting in some good performances, the 30-year-old has only scored one goal in 12 appearances so far.
With that in mind, Ten Hag is looking to bring in a more prolific centre-forward this summer, to help United to continue to challenge for trophies.
As previously reported by TEAMtalk, one of the names at the top of his list is Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, with several big European clubs chasing his signature.
This season, the 24-year-old has scored a staggering 19 goals in 20 Serie A appearances.
Indeed, Osimhen has been key in the Italian giant’s success, with Napoli currently 18 points clear at the top of the table. If he could have a similar impact at Man Utd, they could become serial-title contenders once again.
Another big name the Red Devils have been heavily linked to is Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, who has a chance of leaving the London club this summer.
However, as a 29-year-old, he is less of a long-term investment and could still cost a hefty transfer fee. With that in mind, Osimhen will likely be Ten Hag’s priority.
Ferguson is definitely right that Man Utd need another top goal scorer at their disposal, so it will be interesting to see who they bring in ahead of next season.
