KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Sue On, the first ever horror comedy film produced by renowned rocker and actor Datuk Awie, will be “haunting” cinemas starting from July 6 this year.

Awie who is famously known for being the lead character in multiple movies directed by the late filmmaker Mamat Khalid is now getting into filmmaking, specifically the horror comedy genre.

Talking to portal MStar, Awie or his real name Ahmad Azhar Othman admitted that his upcoming film which was produced under his own production house, Rumah Produksi Merah, is a way for him to honour Mamat’s legacy.

“The reason I produced this film is to continue Mamat’s legacy. We want to continue whatever that’s been done by him in the past.

“A lot of audiences know me from films such as Zombie Kampung Pisang and Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, and they’ve actually accepted my character even though I’m not a comedy actor.

“So, I feel that I need to grab the opportunity to produce this kind of film and finally Sue On came into being,” he said.

The 55-year-old rocker told Harian Metro that the film, which was inspired by a Japanese horror film, is a laid back film which is filled with many comedic elements.

He added that although they are not using the same name as the ones in Mamat’s films, the characters in Sue On are almost similar and the film might also act as an anecdote to those who miss Mamat’s films.

“The storyline might be similar to the ones produced by Abang Mamat.

“The director, Razif ‘Ajiboy’ Rashid also used to be a student of Mamat, so there’s no doubt that the mood of Sue On will be similar to those of Abag Mamat’s past works.

“Insya Allah, the film can help fill in the void for those who missed Abang Mamat’s films,” he said.

Aside from that, the film’s director Razif told portal Gempak that for Sue On, he had referenced a lot of Mamat’s past films as he grew up watching them.

He added that Mamat had helped him to better understand the filming world.

Sue On tells the tale of a Korean ghost looking for its way back after getting stuck in another reality.

The film will also star local big names such as Reen Rahim, Azlee Senario, Achey, Ropee, Nazia Mustafar as well as special appearances by rock band Wings and singer Erra Fazira.
