Food: During weekdays I’ll try to eat as clean as I can, sticking to whole grain options and I have also swapped normal milk to oat/soy/almond. But on weekends or special occasions, I will not restrict myself from any sort of food.

Exercise: I personally love a mixture of strength training, high-intensity group class and long walks or cycling. I would usually strength train at the gym three to four times, group classes two to three times and my long walks or rides two times a week, depending on how my body feels.

Q: When you were younger, you were exposed to a lot of physical activities.

A: Yes. When I was younger fitness wasn’t my priority but my mum used to bring me out every weekend for different sports activities such as wakeboarding, roller blading, tennis, rock climbing, swimming and lots more.

How did you get into dance?

My mum’s amazing and she took me to so many different activities. It just so happened that I love dancing since I was three but only took it seriously as I got older, even making it a career.

I started performing professionally straight after dance school in 2015. There’s nothing like the feeling of being on stage and performing as it makes me really happy to put smiles across so many faces.

One of the best years I had was definitely in 2019, when I was constantly performing back-to-back events at Universal Studios.

Were there any low points?

When I had a back injury, I had to rest for six weeks and that was the lowest point in my dance career both physically and mentally. I realised that I had a lot to do to get back to performing, but I wasn’t ready for the mental aspect of it.

This experience however, has helped me a lot with my current job as a fitness instructor when supporting clients who have suffered injuries and trying to build their way back to fitness.

How did you become a fitness instructor?

I worked at Universal Studios for about six years, then the pandemic put a lot of restrictions on performing. That, along with a long injury, led me to start thinking about diversifying my passion to a fitness career path.

I’ve always looked up to all of my friends who are fitness instructors and it was a few friends of mine that encouraged me to try out for Haus Athletics. I love the buzz that I get from the classes and it’s the similar feeling I have when I was being on stage.

The relationship I build with the clients and the progressions I see that they are making makes it all the more meaningful. The only challenge I have is scheduling, because my day to day schedule can change quickly especially during covid.

Have you experienced any incidents that made you feel insecure about yourself?

One downside of being a performer is that it can often lead to a poor relationship with food which comes with insecurities. Being in the dance industry, you’re surrounded by beautiful people and I didn’t always feel confident in the way I looked. I reached out to a friend who was really into fitness and she helped me to build self-confidence through the gym.

I have struggled with my body weight from time to time but now as a fitness instructor, body weight and physique is a continuum. There’s no finish line, it’s something that you will need to work on all the time as there will be holidays and downtime. But learning to love the gym will always help you to get to where you want to be.

Are you content with your body now?

I’m currently working towards goals that I’ve set myself, but I also think it’s important to have a mindset to love your body at whatever stage it’s at.

Have you ever received any comments about your body?

Different people have contradicting perceptions of what a woman should look like. I have received some positive comments, but also an equal number of negative comments.
