SINGAPORE — Singapore authorities arrested a 22-year-old Malaysian man at Woodlands Checkpoint last Saturday evening, after discovering over 4.7kg of heroin in a Malaysia-registered car he was travelling in.

The joint statement from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), released on Tuesday (8 August), confirmed the arrest on suspicion of drug-related offences.

Seized heroin worth over $331,400

During a routine inspection, ICA officers uncovered a haversack inside the car's trunk. The discovery prompted an immediate alert to CNB officers.

Upon inspection, a large bundle believed to contain controlled substances was identified.

The authorities then discovered ten separate bundles of heroin within the large bundle, weighing 4.72kg collectively.

The estimated street value of the seized heroin exceeds $331,400, and it could sustain the addiction of approximately 2,240 individuals for a week, the authorities said.

Investigations of the arrested suspect are ongoing.

Singapore has some of the harshest penalties for drug trafficking in the world.

Local law dictates that individuals found guilty of trafficking over 15g of pure heroin could face the death penalty.
