Simone Biles says her aunt died unexpectedly during Tokyo Olympics
Simone Biles revealed yet another reason why the Tokyo Olympics have been difficult for her. Following winning a bronze medal in the balance beam Tuesday, Biles revealed her aunt died "unexpectedly" during the Olympics.
Biles, 24, made those comments during a news conference following the event, according to Olympics.com.
"At the end of the day, people don't understand what we are going through," said Biles. "Two days ago, I woke up and my aunt unexpectedly passed, and it wasn't any easier being here at the Olympic Games."
The Tokyo Games have been tough for Biles, who pulled out of multiple events due to her mental health and a bout with the "twisties."
Biles' coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi said Biles told her there was nothing that could be done from Tokyo, and that Biles would deal with the situation when she got home, according to CBS News.
"I was like, 'Oh my God. This week needs to be over,'" Biles' coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi told reporters, referring to when they learned the news of Biles' aunt. "I asked her, 'What do you need?' And she said, 'I just need some time.' I said, 'You call me, text me if you need anything I'll be here. Whatever that is.' She called her parents. She said, 'There's nothing I can do from over here. So I'm just going to finish my week and when I get home we'll deal with it.'"
Biles won two medals at the Tokyo Olympics. She took home a silver as part of the team all-around, and a bronze medal in the balance beam.

Though things didn't go the way Biles anticipated, she is happy with her performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Biles posted a picture on Instagram on Tuesday, saying she will "forever cherish this unique olympic experience."
She added that she was leaving Tokyo with two more Olympic medals, which "isn't too shabby."
