Simone Biles fights for a comeback after mental health issues in new docuseries

New "Simone Biles Rising" trailer features a quick look at her 2023 wedding to Jonathan Owens.

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles memorably withdrew from some events at the 2020 games in Tokyo, citing mental health issues, but she's fought hard for a comeback.

On July 17, just nine days before the 2024 competition begins in Paris, a four-part docuseries on Netflix, Simone Biles: Rising, will offer an inside look at her preparation to make the U.S. team again.

In the new trailer for the project (below), audiences see a recap of her previous struggle, the grueling training process, and a peek at her life with the NFL's Jonathan Owens, who she married in 2023.

Biles notes that she knew early on that something was off about the 2020 competition.

"I've always had really good intuition about things, and unfortunately I felt that way about the Olympics," she said.

Her comeback wasn't easy. The seven-time medalist has been dominating competitions leading up to the games and says she "wanted to quit like 500,000 times," but her support system kept her going.

Her former teammate Aly Raisman, herself a six-time medalist, shows up on screen at one point to point out how impressive Biles' efforts are.

"I know that she's expected to win all the gold medals," Raisman says, "but even the fact she's trying to come back is really amazing."

Biles heads to the gym and takes a deep breath.

"I knew it would be a long journey," she says, "but to me it wasn't done."

Still, she seems to know now what is most important to her, and scores are not it. There are flashes of her elegant wedding, in which she's beaming, and footage of her and Owens picking out real estate.

"It's not all about gym," she says, "Like, life moves on."
