Simon Cowell undergoes surgery for broken back in bike accident

Simon Cowell has undergone surgery for a broken back after an electric bike accident.

The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and America's Got Talent judge injured himself after he fell while testing his new bike at his home in California in the US and has been admitted to hospital.

A spokesperson for Simon said via People: "Simon had a fall from his bike testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family. He hurt his back and was taken to hospital.

"He's doing fine, he's under observation and is in the best possible hands."

They later updated the statement by revealing that "Simon has broken his back and is having surgery this evening".

Digital Spy has contacted Simon's reps for comment.

Simon's former BGT co-judge Piers Morgan sent Simon his best wishes on Twitter, writing, "So sorry to hear this. Sounds a very nasty accident. I wish Simon a successful operation and a full and speedy recovery."

Fans also shared their good wishes for Simon, with one tweeting: "God this is awful I met Simon many times over the years working in hotels he is such a real lovely genuine guy I hope he recovers ASAP".

Another wrote: "So sorry to hear this. Just a terrible injury. Hope his recovery is quick".

America's Got Talent resumed filming last month, with the NBC reality show swapping their usual indoor arena for a huge outdoor movie stage. The network has also reduced the number of Judge Cuts episodes from four to one and cut down the number of performers from 72 to 60.

There is no word yet on whether Cowell's injury will have an impact on the show's filming schedule.
