Sheridan Smith has asked trolls to leave her alone following the birth of her baby boy.

The actress, who welcomed her son Billy back in May, has been targeted online after telling her followers that she wouldn't be sharing any pictures of her baby's face.

"I won't be putting pics of the boy up on social media," she wrote on Instagram. "But basically ... he looks like a male version of me. Just less 80's and more handsome! God love him! we all send our love."

While many understood and supported Smith's decision, some used the post as an opportunity to attack the actress.

Referring to her recent documentary Sheridan Smith: Becoming Mum, in which Billy did not appear, one person wrote: "But you'll happily abuse his right to privacy to make TV documentaries. And cash. The hypocrisy of Sheridan."

In response, the former Gavin & Stacey actress said: "He wasn't in it but I'm sorry you feel that way. I was just expressing my mental health issues and hoping to help others.x."

She later added: "I know I can't stop [those kind of comments] but my boy is the only thing that keeps me going. Please leave us alone."

Sheridan Smith: Becoming Mum aired on ITV at the beginning of September and was heavily praised by viewers.

For the documentary, the actress let a camera crew track the progress of her pregnancy as she reflected on her mental health and explored the help available to pregnant women and new mothers.
