'She Said Yes!': Arkansas Family Surprises Woman With Adoption Papers

A family in Arkansas surprised a woman, who they have been caring for since she was a child, with adoption papers during their Christmas Eve celebration, asking her to officially be their daughter.

This video shows the moment Kanya opened a white envelope, pulled out the papers, and welled up as she realized what they were for.

“Be my sister for real?” Kanya’s soon-to-be sister can be heard asking.

Kanya accepted the offer, her adoptive-mother Kim Harp told Storyful.

Harp said Kanya had grown up across the street and was a year younger than her own daughter. She was regularly at their house, Harp said, as things were often difficult in Kanya’s own home.

“We were already in love with her and considered her our own,” Harp told Storyful.

When Kanya was 18 she moved into the Harp’s home. She put herself through school and later married her high-school sweetheart, with Harp’s husband walking her down the aisle, Harp said.

Harp told Storyful that Ty, Kanya’s husband, had asked them if they ever considered adopting Kanya. Harp said they had thought about it, but did not want to pressure Kanya. Once they found out she would say yes, they began to put the paperwork together.

“We could not be happier, and I think we all now feel complete,” Harp said. Credit: General Mills via Storyful
