Shawn Mendes Postpones Self-Titled Album Release Date to November: 'We Just Need a Little Bit More Time'
The singer also shared that he will be releasing a concert film titled 'For Friends and Family Only'
Shawn Mendes is still hard at work on his next album.
On Wednesday, Oct. 10, the singer-songwriter, 26, announced that he will be delaying his upcoming self-titled LP to Nov. 15 after it was originally set to arrive on Oct. 18.
"My team and I have decided to push the album release date to November 15," Mendes wrote in a statement shared to his Instagram Stories. "We just need a little bit more time to bring some new inspirations and ideas to life."
He continued, "I love you guys, thank you for being so patient. I can’t wait to see you guys at the next few shows."
The statement was shared alongside a behind-the-scenes image of the singer standing in front of an orange backdrop with his guitar during a photoshoot.
Mendes also shared that he will be releasing a concert film titled For Friends and Family Only on Nov. 14 — the night before the album release. "This was my first time performing the album and my first show back in 2 years," he wrote in a separate Instagram Stories post that also included a clip from the movie. "It was really beautiful. I really wanted you all to be able to experience it."
In the video, the singer addresses his fans while on stage, saying, "I was feeling just, like, really weirdly calm for the last four hours. And I was like, 'What is going on?' Oh man, this is just so beautiful. Thank you guys for being here."
The movie was filmed at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, N.Y., according to an official synopsis. "Shawn treats the audience to more than just a concert as he shares personal stories and the inspiration behind each track from the album, giving fans an intimate look at the creative journey that shaped the music," it reads. "The cinema events will provide an unforgettable opportunity to experience Shawn in a completely unique way before its official release date on November 15th."
Mendes announced his fifth studio album on July 31 and has since released multiple singles, including "Nobody Knows," "Why Why Why" and "Isn’t That Enough." According to a press release, the album marks Mendes' "most musically intimate and lyrically honest work to date."
At the time, Mendes detailed the process of recording the album in a heartfelt Instagram post. "Music really can be medicine," he wrote. "2 years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift."
The album comes over two years after Mendes postponed and then canceled his 2022 world tour to prioritize his mental health.
"As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn't totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me," Mendes shared in a statement. "I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away."
"It has become more clear that I need to take the time I've never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger. I unfortunately have to cancel the rest of the tour dates in North America, and the UK/Europe," he continued. "We were hopeful that I might be able to pick up with the rest of the dates after some much needed time off, but at this time I have to put my health as my first priority. This doesn't mean I won't be making new music, and I can't wait to see you on tour in the future."
Earlier this month, he looked back on the experience during an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast and said it was the "hardest" and "greatest" decision he's made.
"I had nowhere to go when things were getting hard, you know? I didn't have other aspects of life that I felt connected to, that I could have leaned into to have a little bit of a break from touring, come back and just find that balance," he explained. "And I knew there was only one way of doing that. And it was by just like creating a life."
