Sharon Stone has said she is unable to stop the release of a new XXX director's cut of Basic Instinct, which she claims exploited her in the film's most famous scene.

The classic thriller, first released in 1992, made Stone, then 34, a star - but she has said many times since that she was tricked into a revealing scene by director Paul Verhoeven.

Her character is being interviewed by police about a brutal murder when she uncrosses her legs in front of them, exposing herself, but has said she had no idea that viewers would be able to see everything.

Now, an enhanced version of the film is set to be re-released on 14 June and Stone has said she can't do anything about it.

Talking to Australian show A Current Affair, the 63-year-old said: "They've decided to release the director's XXX cut for the 30th anniversary.

"There are new [Screen Actors Guild] rules about that that have been made and created but they were made after I, as a young lady, made this film, and so they don't apply to me."

Joking about her feelings on the film, Stone added: "Regrets are like farts, you can't get them back. Once they're out, they're stinky and gone."

Stone has always maintained that she did not know Basic Instinct, which she co-starred in with Michael Douglas, would expose her on screen and wrote about her shock at seeing the preview in her recent memoir The Beauty of Living Twice, saying she slapped director Verhoeven after watching the scene.

In the book, she wrote: "That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time, long after I'd been told, 'We can't see anything - I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on.'

"Yes, there have been many points of view on this topic, but since I'm the one with the vagina, in question, let me say: The other points of view are bulls**t … It was me and my parts up there."

But Verhoeven insists he did not exploit Stone, claiming she knew what she was doing.

In 2018 he told ICON: "Any actress knows what she's going to see if you ask her to take off her underwear and point there with the camera."
