Shailene Woodley recalls life-changing advice given to her by “Divergent” costar Kate Winslet: 'She's just real'
"I would not be who I am today without her," Woodley said.
Shailene Woodley is forever grateful for the sage advice given to her by her Divergent costar, Kate Winslet.
During Thursday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the Three Women actress noted that she’s been “blessed” to have people “show up in a really really, truthful, pure way” throughout her life.
That includes Winslet, who starred opposite her in the 2014 film adaptation of Divergent and its 2015 sequel, Insurgent. When asked by host Drew Barrymore if Winslet had served as a “sounding board” for Woodley in her life, she replied, “I mean, beyond that. She's so — not to overuse the word real — but she's just real. She is who she is, and she's not afraid to be who she is, and she's done the hard work.”
Barrymore, in turn, recalled a quote from the Lee actress wishing that she’d had the confidence to stand up for herself as a young woman amid criticism from men about her body following her star-making role in Titanic.
“But you know what's cool about that is she maybe didn't do that for herself, but she did do it for me,” Woodley said. “She absolutely did, because we worked together.”

The Big Little Lies star said that Winslet personally sat her down when she was just 21 years old and gave her the perspective that she needed.
“I had all the influx of public life and being told you should look a certain way, or you should be a certain thing or don't eat that or do this or dye your hair a different color,” Woodley said. “And she absolutely sat me down, held my shoulders, did this, and was like, ‘No, no, no. That's not who you are. This is the truth.’”
She continued, “She gave me that moment and I would not be who I am today without her.”
