KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has beaten his own record.
His newly released action thriller, Jawan has collected RM748 million on opening day, overtaking his previous movie, Pathaan which earned RM696 million eight months ago in January.
This puts Jawan at the top spot, delivering the biggest single day opening for a Hindi language film.
Industry tracker Sacnilk said approximately RM649 million has come from the Hindi version, with the remaining RM98 million coming from the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions, reported Indian Express.
News of the record-breaking figures hardly come as a surprise as videos and photos posted on social media show thousands of fans waiting in line outside cinemas across India yesterday.
Some die-hard fans even started queuing at 4.30am to catch the 5am screenings of the nationwide premiere, accompanied by the customary fanfare of bursting fire crackers and dancing in the streets, reported CNN.
Khan took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to thank his fans and said he stayed up late to watch the commotion unfold.
“Love u boys and girls I hope u enjoy the entertainment,” he posted. "Kept awake to see u go to the theatre. Big love and thanks.”
Produced by Khan’s wife, Gauri Khan and directed by prominent South Indian filmmaker Atlee, Jawan which means soldier, is already raking in about RM28 million worldwide in advance bookings.
