Sex and the City Sets Netflix Release Date — When Will It Hit the Streaming Giant?

Break out the cosmos: HBO’s Sex and the City is coming to Netflix on Monday, April 1.

The previously announced acquisition — which is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s licensing deal with the streaming giant — includes the rights for the show’s original six seasons.

HBO formerly had a policy of not licensing its content to Netflix until that deal dropped. Insecure and Ballers became its test subjects, while more recent agreements were made for Band of Brothers and Six Feet Under. The licenses are non-exclusive, meaning that the series (including Sex and the City) will still be available on Max.

There are precedents for HBO licensing shows outside of their own corporate structure. A heavily edited version of Sex and the City was sold in syndication to corporate sibling TBS, while Curb Your Enthusiasm aired on TV Guide Channel and Entourage screened on Spike. In addition, series like The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood and The Wire were previously licensed to Amazon before the existence of the company’s own streamer Max.

Sex and the City aired on HBO between 1998 and 2004, and stars Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall as four friends navigating their love lives in New York. The series spawned two feature films, with Davis, Parker and Nixon reuniting for Max’s And Just Like That… While the revival was renewed for Season 3, it likely won’t release until 2025. It will also remain a Max exclusive for the foreseeable future.
