Selena Gomez Demands Facebook Shuts Down "Hate Speech" Groups

From Harper's BAZAAR

Selena Gomez is using this time of quarantine to focus on how she can make a difference in the wider world, even from the comfort of her own home. Earlier this month, during an interview on Variety and iHeart's podcast, "The Big Ticket," Gomez shared that this time alone has allowed her to have "the opportunity to learn a lot about my country in ways that I never have before."

In a display of activism, Gomez shared a message that she sent to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg. "Selena here," she began. "It's been a while since we sat down. We have a serious problem. @Facebook and @Instagram are being used to spread hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry. I am calling on you both to HELP STOP THIS. Please shut down groups and users focused on spreading hate speech violence and misinformation. Our future depends on it. This is an election year. We cannot afford to have misinformation about voting. There has to be fact-checking and accountability. Hope to hear back from you ASAP."

At the top of her post, Gomez appears to be referencing the time and Zuckerberg met in Facebook's "smallest room," where they took this hilarious photo.

But Gomez isn't joking now. She posted this note after the big celebrity push for the "#StopHateForProfit" campaign. On Wednesday, celebrities and businesses froze their Facebook and Instagram accounts for 24 hours in order to call for changes at the company, including taking down "groups focused on white supremacy, militia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and violent conspiracies."

Stop Hate for Profit was started by nine civil rights equality organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League, Color of Change, and the NAACP and according to its website, is "a diverse and growing coalition that wants Facebook to take common-sense steps to address the rampant racism, disinformation and hate on its platform."
