"Sometimes, something magical happens when you do get to go home again," Gomez, 31, said.

Following Gomez's announcement, Disney unveiled first-look images, featuring a still of Gomez as she reprises her role as Alex Russo alongside former costar David Henrie as Justin Russo.
Another shot featured Gomez and Henrie, 34, alongside the full cast, which is also comprised of new series lead Janice LeAnn Brown (Billie Russo), Mimi Gianopulos (Giada Russo), Alkaio Thiele (Roman Russo) and Max Matenko (Milo Russo).
Per a synopsis from Disney, the new series will follow "an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada, Roman and Milo."
"When Justin’s sister Alex brings Billie to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities — and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World," the summary concludes.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place comes 12 years after its predecessor concluded its four-season run on the Disney Channel. The popular series also had one TV movie, 2009's Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, and a TV special, 2012's The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.
Before the new iteration was announced in January, Gomez was asked about which project of hers she'd like to remake or reboot, telling Extra in 2022: "Mine is Wizards, hands down, I would love that."
