Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has bought a painting that depicts Malaysian members of parliament (MPs) as monkeys and frogs.

In a post on Facebook on Tuesday (12 April), the Selangor Royal Office said the painting had attracted the Sultan’s attention. He wanted to buy the painting and hang it in his private study room, according to the post.

The Sultan hopes to auction the painting one day with sales proceeds to be donated to charity, the post added.

The post comes with several photos including one showing the Sultan standing next to the painting while his photo was being taken.

The painting features chimpanzees, gibbons, gorillas, orang-utans and frogs of various colours occupying seats in the Malaysian parliament, the coat of arms of Malaysia, and the state flags. Several of the apes appear to be animated while the Speaker of Parliament uses a microphone to address MPs.

Many netizens have commented in the post, praising the Sultan and saying the painting accurately depicts Malaysian politics.

"That's really the state of our country's politicians, Your Majesty. But later they will still smile happily as if they don't feel guilty even though they look at the picture, Your Majesty,” one netizen said.
