Security Guard Killed in Shooting at New Hampshire Psychiatric Hospital Remembered as ‘Hero’

Bradley Haas "died a hero protecting the patients and staff of New Hampshire Hospital" when a gunman opened fire Friday, officials said

Bradley Haas, a security guard who was killed after confronting a shooter at a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire, is being remembered as a “hero” who dedicated his life to public service.

Haas, 63, of Franklin, was working his shift in the lobby entrance of the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord when a gunman fatally shot him around 3:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.

Haas was a father and the former chief of police with the Franklin Police Department for nearly 30 years, the release states. He also previously served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army. Authorities said Haas’ family is asking for privacy at this time.

An autopsy determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his manner of death was homicide, the AG’s office said.

On Saturday, New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued a statement about Haas' death, describing how the security officer was heroic in facing the shooter and preventing further harm.

“On behalf of all members of the New Hampshire Department of Safety, I extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Security Officer Bradley Haas,” Commissioner Robert L. Quinn said.

“Officer Haas was a dedicated member of the safety team who died a hero protecting the patients and staff of New Hampshire Hospital,” he added. “Our hearts ache at this loss.”

After Haas was shot, the AG’s office says that the suspected shooter, 33-year-old John Madore, was shot and killed by a New Hampshire State Police trooper also assigned to the hospital. Authorities have not publicly shared the trooper’s identity as they had yet to be formally interviewed.

State Police Col. Mark Hall said, per WMUR-TV and NBC News, that investigators are looking into a U-Haul truck that was left at the scene and contained AR-15-style weapon, a tactical vest and ammunition. Madore's connection to the truck is unclear.
