  • The Good Doctor is officially renewed for a fourth season on ABC.
  • It's unknown when The Good Doctor season 4 will premiere.
  • Actors Nicholas Gonzalez and Jasika Nicole will not be returning for season 4.

When season 3 of The Good Doctor wrapped up, there was a lot to unpack.

The hit medical drama concluded with a highly anticipated two-part finale, which involved heroism, romance, and a death. Since season 3 kicked off last September, quite a bit has happened in the lives of Dr. Shaun Murphy, Dr. Neil Melendez, and the rest of the St. Bonaventure Hospital staff. Luckily, fans still have a lot to look forward to when season 4 rolls around.

Like most scripted cable TV shows, The Good Doctor has always aired on an annual cycle, with each season having a fall premiere, a brief hiatus in December, and a mid-season return at the start of the following calendar year. Pending ABC is able to find a safe way to film amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, The Good Doctor will likely come back sometime around September 2020.

If that projection changes though, we will update this post.

Will all of The Good Doctor cast return for season 4?

Sadly, not all of The Good Doctor cast is returning for the fourth season. As fans know, Melendez died from major internal injuries — marking actor Nicholas Gonzalez’s last appearance as the surgeon. Shortly after the season 3 finale, TVLine also announced that actress Jasika Nicole would not be returning as Dr. Carly Lever.

Not to mention, fans were left on the edge of their seats when Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) said he plans on moving to Arizona to be closer to his family. What's more, Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) was given the news that she had ended her career while trying to save a patient’s life.

But the show's creator quickly cleared the air about the future of these two characters.

“Look, I don’t think Dr. Park is going to be leaving. I don’t think Dr. Morgan’s going to be leaving,” he told Deadline. “But there are going to be changes for those characters as a result of things that have happened to them and the experiences they’ve had — in her case a physical change, in his case an emotional change. But there will be changes for both of them.”

At the moment, fans can rest assured that Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Paige Spara will all be reprising their roles.

Are there any Good Doctor season 4 spoilers?

Nope, not yet. David told Deadline that there wasn’t a lot to know about the fourth season because it was still being worked out.

“I’m not a genius enough to know where things are going. That’s the excitement for me, too,” he said. “I’m excited by the opportunities it’s presenting for me and the excitement for the audience, but to a great extent, all that’ll be determined over the next few months, as we sit down in the writers’ room, or sit down in our respective offices, and join each other over the internet, and put some flesh on the bones of these opportunities.”

But he hopes that Dr. Claire Browne will be working under Dr. Audrey Lim and Morgan under Dr. Marcus Andrews.

We'll be keeping an eye out for any juicy season 4 spoilers — but in the meantime, you can catch up on episodes of The Good Doctor seasons 1, 2, and 3 on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
