Search Continues After Ireland's Celebrity Dolphin Vanishes From Kerry Coast

A large search operation for Ireland’s most famous dolphin, Fungie, was temporarily halted due to bad weather on October 19, after the celebrity mammal vanished from the Kerry harbor he called home for almost 40 years.

Footage posted Dingle Dolphin Tours shows Fungie, a male bottlenose dolphin, swimming alongside a boat two days before his mysterious disappearance.

A fleet of boats searched Dingle harbor on the southwest coast of Ireland after Fungie went missing on October 13, and a team of divers traveled from a nearby county to assist with the search.

Local boatmen told RTE News that it was extremely rare for the dolphin to disappear for that length of time.

Fungie, who arrived in Dingle Harbor in 1983 and lives on his own, is known for his friendly personality and eagerness to interact with humans. A beloved figure, Fungie draws scores of tourists to the seaside town each year. Credit: Dingle Dolphin Tours via Storyful
