SEA Games: Women's bowlers retain team title, overtaking Malaysia for gold
SINGAPORE — Singapore's women's bowlers continued to reap golden harvest at the SEA Games, as they retained their team title at the Vincom Megamall Royal City's Heroworld Bowling Centre on Thursday (19 May).
Cherie Tan, New Hui Fen, Daphne Tan and Bernice Lim amassed 5,049 pinfalls to top the standings ahead of the silver-winning Malaysian team (4,951 pinfalls) and third-placed Indonesia (4,843 pinfalls).
The team gold meant that Singapore have swept all three women's bowling golds. Cherie had won the singles event on Monday, before teaming up with New to clinch the doubles title on Tuesday.
They had to come from behind to successfully defend their team title, as they were in second place behind Malaysia after Wednesday's first block of three games.
However, they surged ahead to start the second block, scoring 965 pinfalls to take the lead and never relinquishing it.
Singapore's men's bowling team also clinched a bronze medal on Thursday. Muhammad Jaris Goh, Timothy Tham, Darren Ong and Cheah Ray Han scored a total of 4,963 pinfalls to finish behind gold-medallists Philippines (5,275 pinfalls) and silver-medallists Malaysia (5,162 pinfalls).
